Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, an exiled novelist and recipient of multiple international awards, recently visited the Uganda Embassy in Berlin to apply for a passport. Rukirabashaija, who holds an LLB from Cavendish Law School and an LLM in Public International Law and International Humanitarian Law from Europa Universität, has been living in exile and is a survivor of torture.
During his visit to the embassy, Rukirabashaija reported encountering very helpful staff who assisted him with his passport application. He also mentioned receiving Ugandan gifts, including Uganda Waragi and coffee, which added a touch of home to his experience. Interestingly, Rukirabashaija noted that the Uganda Embassy in Berlin is the only functional Ugandan embassy abroad, highlighting its significance for Ugandan nationals living abroad.
However, despite the positive reception at the embassy, Rukirabashaija’s visit stirred reactions from social media users. Nick Twinamatsiko cautioned him about Uganda Waragi, referencing a clip involving Ssejusa that apparently explains the potential risks. Another user, Kafeeza, expressed excitement about Rukirabashaija’s return, albeit with a hint of skepticism about his outspoken nature.
In a similar vein, a user who identified as a press secretary of Gen Salim Saleh warned Rukirabashaija to return as a changed person to avoid facing consequences for his outspokenness. Despite the cautionary tones, there were also messages of support and longing for Rukirabashaija’s return. One user even hinted at Rukirabashaija’s potential presidential candidacy in 2031, expressing a desire for him to come back home.
Additionally, a cryptic message from a Kenyan follower referenced Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi, implying a warning about the potential dangers of speaking out against authority figures. These varied responses reflect the complex dynamics surrounding Rukirabashaija’s desire to return from exile and the challenges he may face upon his return.
